What MCP is
The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard for connecting AI clients to external tools and data. You build an MCP server that exposes scoped capabilities — search orders, read a policy doc, create a support ticket — and any MCP-compatible client can use them. Anthropic introduced MCP in 2024; Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, and VS Code now support it.

Claude Desktop and Claude chat connect to local or remote MCP servers. ChatGPT custom connectors require a remote HTTPS endpoint. Gemini CLI reads MCP configuration from settings files. Developer tools — Cursor, GitHub Copilot, VS Code — also speak MCP, which makes the same server useful for both business users and engineering teams.
